Importance of Adult Education

Education is the systematic process of educating people, either in a formal school, institution of higher learning, community or even private organization. Educational systems include training, teaching, collaborative study, story telling, reflection and more. Education is usually based on the techniques of teaching and learning. There are numerous factors that influence the level and quality of education. The following are some common factors that we should take note of: structure and method; subject matter and learning styles; students’ aptitude; cost; technology and supplementary equipments; and the availability of resources. Therefore, to ensure the quality level of education, below are mentioned tips.

An informal education normally utilizes direct and indirect learning processes, applied learning is not a part of this. It is important for students to interact with others, form social relationships, use various modes of communication such as electronic and internet technology, participate in activities based on their interest and have open minds. Formal education on the other hand is usually classroom based and is very structured to ensure proper learning process.

Students from both formal and non-formal education have access to same knowledge. Informal education does not only help them learn something but also helps them as well to understand the subject matter in an easier manner. Students who have gained higher education also gain a formal education but they tend to be self-conscious about their learning style, what they lack in formal learning and what they are good at in formal learning. Formal education includes learning system, teaching methods, textbook, learning tools, disciplines and learning objectives. On the other hand, non-formal education is less structured; it may include informal learning process, group projects, role playing, parental guidance, family orientation, informal learning and more.

It is observed that teachers prefer to teach informal education where as they find it difficult to teach formal subjects in an informal way because they do not possess the capability to teach students properly in formal mode. In most of the cases, informal education requires the participation of parents, guardians, counselors and experts. Informal education is more beneficial for those who want to complete higher studies or want to upgrade their education.

Formal education is usually taught in schools while non-formal education is taught at home or in any place where there is enough space to accommodate the teacher and the students. Both of these programs are benefited by the teachers, as they can engage more students in their curriculum. Formal education tends to bring in more professionals and employed but non-formal education can be benefited by imparting knowledge on less qualified people.

Since adults have a tendency to move around a lot, they find it hard to stay at one place for a long period of time. That is the reason why many governments are providing adult education programs through which trained and experienced adult from different fields such as education, healthcare and business can impart knowledge to the neophytes. Adult education programs helps an individual to gain knowledge about new job roles and new technologies. It also helps an individual to enhance his career prospects and realize his goals.
